Middle Grade Adventure Fantasy Bundle

Excerpt from Day of Reckoning

Though her heart did its best imitation of a hummingbird and her legs twitched with the desperate need to kick into flight mode, she somehow sensed it wasn’t unexpected for her to wake at two in the morning to find an elf-like creature standing politely in her bedroom. Maybe it was his serene expression or the way he folded his hands together as he waited for her reaction.

Nonetheless, she clutched the comforter under her chin, ready to throw herself under her covers if he bared spiked teeth and razor-sharp claws.

“What are you?” Terra’s voice, barely a whisper, shook with fear.

The creature stepped into a beam of moonlight streaming through the window. Terra blinked, screwing up her expression with the effort to see in the dark. Hair tickled her chin as a cool night breeze stole into the room.

“Where’s my window?” She choked over the words, scooting as far into the corner of her bed as she could press herself, dragging her comforter with her. Though the creature was no more than two feet tall, he’d managed to make her window disappear, so it seemed likely he could grab her by the ankle and drag her from the house.

The creature removed a pointy hat from his bald, bony head. “Please, young miss, let me introduce myself.” He bowed formally. “I am Hermie, your Introguide.”

His voice was a strange mixture of croaky and squeaky. Everything about him was as pointy as his hat. His nose, ears, chin, and fingers all ended in points. Muddy colored skin blended into the shadows of the moonlit room. An engaging smile reshaped his expressive face. Bright eyes glowed with kindness. Though there was not a fang in sight, Terra was still wary.

“But what are you? And why are you in my room?”

Look Inside

Robin’s squeal of delight was the reason Frank broke the rules and brought stuff down from the Outerworld.

“Come on already!” Anna slapped her hands against her thighs, the muffled stomp of her foot in the ankle high grass displayed her impatience.

Frank glanced at his partner just in time to see her tap her watch-less wrist. A smile tugged at his lips when she huffed.

“Time stands still down here,” he said. “What’s the hurry?”

Before him, Robin, a young Archer, perched in the round of the tire swing Frank had just hung. Her thin arms wrapped tight around the thick rubber, to keep her from tumbling to the ground. Her silver hair streamed like a shooting star behind her in stark relief against the darkness of the earthen ceiling far above their heads. She squealed with pleasure each time Frank gave her a gentle shove, sending her and the swing soaring.

“I don’t get it, Robin.” Anna’s gaze tracked the girl back and forth. “Why do you enjoy that swing so much? You’re an Archer. You leap higher than that thing can carry you while you create your beautiful rainbows.”

Robin’s uncontrollable giggles prevented a reply.

Frank’s heart fluttered as quickly as Robin’s thin wings as the joy he provided for the young Archer filled him up. He laughed when Robin tucked her wings close to her back and the tire swing spun around and around.

“Whoa!” Robin cried, still laughing.

Finally, Anna gave into laughter as well, her blond ponytail swinging back and forth as she shook her head at Frank. “Mark needs to develop a special punishment for your insubordination. First the teeter-totter and now a tire swing!”

“I’m not doing anything wrong,” Frank said. “I’m still performing all of my duties as a Natures Spirit. We’ve already made our rounds of the blue and green sections. Mark doesn’t care if we get sidelined while making sure the citizens of Concord are safe.”
